For New Licensees/Applicants: Overview of Basic Licensing Concepts 
 
New Social Work Regulations

Degree Required
A Master's of Social Work (MSW) degree from a college or university accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) or Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work (CASSW).


LMSW - Who is Eligible?
Requirements
The requirements are found in ORS 675.533 and include:
  • A Master's Degree in Social Work
  • ASWB Master's Exam (required beginning January 1, 2013)
  • Oregon Jurisprudence Exam 
 
Please Note:  The ASWB Master's Exam is not required for LMSWs applicants who submit applications beginning January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2012.
 

About the Exam
The Oregon examination for licensure consists of two separate exams:
  1. National Exam by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)
  2. Oregon Jurisprudence Exam (current law and rules; a self-test)
 
The ASWB Master's Exam requirement is being waived for all LMSW applications received prior to January 1, 2013.
 
The Oregon Jurisprudence Exam will be mailed once all application materials have been received, together with Oregon's Rules and Statutes.  Once completed, the exam is mailed, faxed, or emailed back to the Board's office for grading.
 

How to Apply
The LMSW Application includes:
 
An official transcript is required as part of the application process and is to be mailed directly from your graduate school to the Board office at 3218 Pringle Road SE, Suite 240, Salem, OR 97302. Please note on Form 1 if your transcript name is different from your current name.

The following are the LMSW licensing fees:
