Job Description
Scaffold erectors erect scaffolding for buildings and ship structures. They install ladders, handrails, walkways, platforms and gangways, and erect, move, dismantle frame scaffolding, mobile tower scaffolding, tube clamp scaffolding and system scaffolding.
 
Working Conditions
The apprentice must be able to work at heights. Scaffold erectors use power tools and power lifts. Outdoor work can be in all types of weather. The apprentices must be physically strong and agile.
 
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at 71 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved.
 
Length of Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship lasts two years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 160 related classroom hours per year and 4,000 on-the-job training hours.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 17 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.
 
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
