Oregon Apprenticeship Guide
 
Job Description
Industrial equipment mechanics work in a plant and maintain mobile conveyances that may include mobile cranes, bulldozers, forklifts, manlifts, trackmobiles, gas and diesel vehicles, mobile pumps and stationary engines. Work involves the repair or replacement of chassis and component parts, brakes, clutches and transmissions, engines, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems, electrical systems, fuel injection systems, fuel pumps and carburetors, both gas and diesel.
 
Working Conditions
Most work is typically carried out indoors in a plant facility. The work requires both upper body strength and fine motor skills. There is significant bending and squatting in some of the repair work.
 
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at approximately 50 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase, usually every six months until the journey-level rate is achieved.
 
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts four years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 8,000 on-the-job training hours.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.
 
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
 
These programs are limited to current employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee. These programs may have limited opportunities available.
