GAS UTILITY SERVICER
Oregon Apprenticeship Guide
 
Job Description
Gas utility servicers install and repair gas meters, regulators and appliances. They test and examine pipelines and equipment to locate leaks, faulty pipe connections and to determine the pressure and flow of gas. They dismantle meters and regulators and replace defective pipes, thermocouples, thermostats and valves.
 
Working Conditions
This work is done both inside and outside. Utility servicers work with and around gas and electricity. Jobs may involve some fire suppression and traffic control work. Workers in this field use hand tools, manometers, voltmeters and combustible gas indicators.
 
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at about 80 percent of the average journey level wage. Upon successful completion of the required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the journey-level wage is achieved.
 
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts two years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 72 related classroom hours per year and a total of 4,000 on-the-job training hours.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent, and successfully complete the basic gas and electrical course provided by employers.
 
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
 
This program is only open to employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee.
