WATER SERVICER
Oregon Apprenticeship Guide
 
Job Description
Water service mechanics install and connect water meters in consumer establishments. They examine pipes to detect leaks. They also install and repair water system pipes and accessories.
 
Water service utility workers clean water filter beds. They wash and simultaneously screen sand and gravel to remove foreign particles and grade material according to size. They clean and redistribute sand in filter beds and may lubricate and repair defective filtering equipment.
 
Working Conditions
The work may be done indoors or outdoors, depending on the particular trade. People in these occupations use both hand and power tools. Some work may involve site excavation and traffic control.
 
Wages
Beginning apprentices start at between 50 to 66 percent of the average journey level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the full journey level rate is achieved.
 
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeships last two years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 120 hours per year of related training and a total of 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Apprentices must be at least 18 years of age. Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
 
Applicants must successfully complete the City of Portland Civil Service Application and selection procedures for these apprenticeships.
