Wage and Hour: Child Labor

A Guide for Working Teens, 14 through 17
  1. You must receive at least the minimum wage for all hours your employer requires you to work, including preparation time, opening and closing times and required meetings.

  2. Your employer MAY NOT deduct from your wages for breakage, cash shortages, tools and uniforms. Some exceptions to this rule are allowed. Contact the nearest Bureau of Labor and Industries office for information.

  3. Keep good records of hours worked. If there´s a difference between your records and your employer´s, review your records together.

  4. Employers must pay you regularly, either weekly, every other week or monthly. You must also be given a statement listing any deductions--like taxes--taken from your paycheck.

  5. You must be given a 15-minute paid rest period for each four hours worked.

  6. You must be given at least a 30-minute unpaid meal period after no more than five hours of working. Some exceptions to this rule are allowed. Contact the nearest Bureau of Labor and Industries office for information.

  7. If your employer calls you into work, but has no work for you when you arrive and ends up sending you home, your employer must still pay you for one-half of your scheduled shift for that day.

  8. If you are fired, your employer must pay you all the wages you have earned not later than the first business day after the discharge.

  9. You have a right to a safe workplace! You can´t be required to perform dangerous jobs or to lift any weight which is too heavy. Contact the nearest Bureau of Labor and Industries office to find out which jobs you are NOT allowed to do if you are under 18.

  10. If you are injured on the job, tell your employer right away! Your employer has an obligation to provide you with employer-paid medical treatment.

  11. Your employer must provide a work environment free from racial, sexual and religious harassment.
