Upcoming Commission Board Meeting Schedule
All members of the public are invited to attend the Commission for the Blind's bi-monthly Board Meetings. Meetings are always held at our Portland Office located at 535 SE 12th Avenue. Portland, Oregon 97214. Meetings are generally held at 3:00PM on the first Friday of even-numbered months. The remaining meeting-schedule for 2012 is listed below, but please call ahead to confirm as dates and times are subject to change due to circumstances. This and any other information regarding these meetings can be obtained by calling our toll free-number: (888) 202-5463.

May 2012- This issue of the Blind Spot features information on three different Low Vision Fairs that helped expand possibilities for those living in Southern Oregon. The fairs were held throughout the month of April in Eugene, Medford, and Grants Pass respectively. The fairs were a great success and showcased several new technologies and products that help people with low-vision. Thank you to everyone who attended or helped to organize these fairs! After a quick fast-fact, we hear the story of Mamie and Marthana who met at the Low Vision Fair in Eugene proving that even in your 90's it is never too late to make a new friend! The issue finishes off with a note to businesses from our Business Relations Coordinator, Lynda VanDoran who encourages them to tap our talented pool of clients when looking for new employees! We hope you enjoy this issue of the Blind Spot!
March 2012- This issue of the Blind Spot features information on our College Mentor Program as well as a look back at the College Mentoring Seminar held in January. Then read an inspiring Vocational Rehabilitation Testimonial from Candy Barton-Smith. Finally, learn about the latest and greatest technologies for people who are blind or visually impaired including the I-Pad and I-Phone. We hope you enjoy these stories and everything else in this issue of the Blind Spot!
January 2012- This is a double-issue of the Blind Spot due to there being no November issue. Needless to say, it is packed with updates and stories as we finished up 2011 strong! First, a message from our Administrator, Linda Mock, who reviews 2011 and looks ahead to the future as well. Then read about our 2011 Power Award Business Winner, New Seasons Concordia. New Seasons' managers Forrest Gonsiewski and Pat Cassidy shared this award. The Individual Power Award is up next as we revisit the Mr. Young Kim (see: May 2011 issue) and recognize the great example and inspiration he provides others. Then read about the Live Resume event organized by our Job Developer, Lynda VanDoran in a great partnership with Incight (a wonderful organization that helps people with disabilities to find jobs). After that comes the story of the 2011 Above and Beyond Award winner, Jim Hefley, manager of the Dollar Tree store by Mall 205. Finally learn about Project ACCESS and O.C.B. client Brian Burr who is the program's first IT intern. Way to go Brian! All of this plus much more in this double-issue of the Blind Spot!
September 2011- Learn all about OCB’s Summer Work Experience program which has been helping young blind students gain valuable real-world experience since 1973. Though we could easily fill a book with all the amazing people and inspiring stories to come from this program over the years, we thought it would be neat to highlight five students from a recent cohort for this month’s newsletter. Congratulations to all of SWEP’s students on another great year! Also, read the incredible story of Kazuko Renes and her Origami correspondence with a man from her home country of Japan. Congratulations to Kazuko on her blue-ribbon at the Douglas County Fair and thank you for sharing you amazing Origami cranes!
July 2011- Read all about OCB's Living With Blindness Seminars which have been going on for over 20 years now! This year a new idea was piloted to hold Living With Blindness seminars that are specific to individual eye conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and you can read all about how it went! Then read on to learn about OCB's efforts in working with local human resource professionals to connect well-qualified applicants with job opportunities at great companies. Our Business Relations Coordinator, Lynda Van Doran, arranged a roundtable discussion at our Portland office and it was great for both OCB and the many companies represented to come together for this event!
May 2011- Read about Mr. Young Kim's story of great success and how both his wife and OCB supported him as he met his goals and now continues to excel in life. Then learn all about Mark Francis and the woodshop he runs here at our Portland office. Mark is a master carpenter and helps OCB clients to build a huge variety of amazing projects and gain confidence in their skills. We answer some questions about glaucoma before Lynda Van Doran's great discussion on community partnerships wraps up this edition of The Blind Spot. Thanks for reading!
March 2011- Read a message from the Commission for the Blind's Board Chairman, Frank Armstrong as well as a brief profile of Mr. Armstrong's distinguished life! Then read about Mr. Nicholas Johnson who is living proof of the power of positive thinking and motivation! Lastly, there is a report straight from the mouths of past and current clients who attended the OCB Budget hearing down at the State Capitol in Salem. Thanks to all who attended and showed their support to the Commission for the Blind!
January 2011- Read a message from our Agency Administrator Linda Mock. Then read about our 2010 Power Award Winners. Colleen Madigan took full advantage of the OCB Training Center by taking classes in computers, mobility, woodshop, braille as well as participating in the challenge course and paddling on a gold-medal-winning dragon-boat team! After completing her training Colleen returned to work fully confident that she could continue to excel in her career! Our 2010 Business Power Award Winner was Gresham Ford. Read all about Gresham Ford's positive impact in the community as well the positive impact made by Tracy McGee, an OCB client who is now excelling as a Customer Service Manager at Gresham Ford. Finally, read more about our agency's services as well as some facts, figures, and a list of some of OCB's accomplishments from 2003-2010!
November 2010- Read about Lynda Van Doran's Community Based Work Experience program as well as first-hand accounts of how beneficial this program can be. Tracy McGee explains how the program helped her get a great job in the auto-industry and Bess Wells of Gresham Ford explains how well it has worked out for business too! Then read about another success story from counselor Dennis Crepeaux and his client Shaun Stickel who worked with OCB all the way through college and then ultimately found a great job as a Computer Project Engineer for Micron Technology Inc. Way to go Tracy and Shaun!
September 2010- Read all about Katie Teuber, a young woman with a bright future! Katie discusses how OCB's Summer Work Experience Program and her hard work has helped her gain not only confidence, but a job too! Then learn about our popular NFB Newsline Program that allows those who are unable to read conventional print to have access to all the day's news from over 300 newspapers from around the world via a toll-free phonecall. Also, be sure to read the inspirational story of Mike Seely who lost most of his vision in an accident three years ago, but has come back into the workforce by starting his own woodworking business after taking a class with OCB's Woodworking Instructor, Mark Francis!
July 2010- This issue of "Blind Spot" reviews the great success of the semi-annual "Living With Vision Loss" seminar at Oral Hull. It also introduces you to our newest Assistant Director of Rehabilitation, Angel Hale, who is taking over the Older Blind Program for the retiring Frank Synoground. Then learn about other staff accomplishments from Doris Patke's rare certification to a great example of collaboration between our Vocational Specialist Juanita Cook and Michele Nielsen, RN, MA, CRC. Lastly, in her own words, Dr. Jamie Weaver, assistant professor of musicology at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas tells her success story and explains how OCB helped her along the way!
May 2010- Read the recap of Debbie Ryan telling her "Success Story" at our Commission Board Meeting. Debbie does a great job explaining the ins and outs of how the Senior Seminar can be life-changingly helpful to those who attend. Then learn about Bonnie Cooper and how she regained an old hobby in our woodshop and made a jaw-droppingly beautiful rocking-horse for her grand-daughter! Mike Thomas, an access technology specialist, then explains just how rapidly technology is changing and how these leaps and bounds are benefitting people with low-vision and blindness. Finally, read about Cecilia who, with the help of the Commission for the Blind, was able to continue her work as a forensic scientist and become an expert witness on DNA fingerprinting!
March 2010- Read about Kyle House's journey as he worked his way up to a hi-tech job with audio systems for Willamette University. Kyle, only 27, has already headed a million dollar project for Willamette! Also read about the technology services that the Commission for the Blind offers. Then read about the Kazuko Renes who proves that you can always keep learning and living to the fullest at any time of life!
January 2010- Read the amazing story of Naturopathic Doctor Chris Cooke who has opened a successful private practice near Providence Hospital. Learn who won OCB's Employer of the Year Award for 2009 and why they were chosen. Also, read some facts and figures about the benefits of our Vocational Rehabilitation Program and see the wide variety of jobs that our clients worked at during 2009!
November 2009- Read about a Volio Kesic, a former client who is not only a program analyst with the V.A. Medical Center in Portland, but also working on a start-up wind-turbine company! Also learn about the Business Services that we offer or read about Noelle Williamson's high-flying adventures!
September 2009 Read all about Tia Diaz and Joshua Hackney's Summer Work Experience as a dorm counselor and sports camp counselor respectively! Read about what businesses in the community have done a great job partnering with OCB in finding great jobs for Oregonians with visual impairments. Also, learn more about our Vocational Rehabilitation Program as well as our Senior Program here at the Commission.
July 2009 The very first issue of Blind Spot! Read about acupuncturist Fang-kun Chen, a former client who now runs a thriving private practice in Northeast Portland.
