Lead-Based Paint Program

Renovation
Abatement, lead-based paint inspection or risk assessment
Introduction
Federal and state laws regulate contractors that perform work on homes and buildings that may contain lead-based paint.
 
The Construction Contractors Board (CCB) requires contractors(businesses) and individuals that perform certain work on "target housing" and "child-occupied facilities" to have specific licenses dependent on the work being performed.

Renovation
Contractors that renovate older homes or buildings regularly used by young children (that may contain lead-based paint) must apply for a certified Lead-Based Paint Renovation (LBPR) Contractor's license. Click here for more information on CCB's LBPR license and requirements.

Abatement, lead-based paint inspection or risk assessment
Contractors that offer lead abatement, lead-based paint inspection or risk assessment must obtain the appropriate Lead-Based Paint Activities licenses from the CCB.
 
To qualify for a Lead-Based Paint Activities license (business), contractors must have the following:
  • A license for a Lead Abatement Contractor must have at least one owner or employee who is a licensed lead supervisor (individual license) by the CCB.
 
  • A license For a Lead Inspection Contractor must have at least one owner or employee who is a licensed lead inspector or licensed lead risk assessor (both are individual licenses) by the CCB.
