| The Oregon Youth Employment Initiative |
|
OYCC is a state granting agency and we do not directly employ Corpsmembers and Crew Leaders. We sponsor individual, local programs in every county in the state.
Oregon Youth Employment Initiative
The purpose of this initiative is to create employment opportunities for youth and supporting adults. This employment initiative is designed around the basic concept of governmental and non-governmental organizations making specific natural resource or conservation education project proposals to OYCC/CCWD, who will in turn work with representatives of signatory agencies to the intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding for the Oregon Youth Employment Initiative (OYEI MOU) to review and select approved projects. The projects are intended to fall within the scope of natural resource and conservation education projects.
The Oregon Youth Employment Initiative summer providers have been selected. Please see the Summer 2009 ARRA Provider List in the “Program Partners” section towards the bottom of our website or by clicking here (pdf) and contact the program in your county. Any additional inquiries should be directed through e-mail and can be accessed by clicking on the “Contact Us” link provided on the website.

History of Oregon Youth Conservation Corps
The Oregon Youth Conservation Corps (OYCC) Summer Conservation Corps (SCC) was established by the Oregon Legislature in 1987, to provide a program to increase educational, training and employment opportunities for youth; to improve work skills, instill a strong work ethic and increase their employability; and to increase social skills such as tolerance of diversity, team work, social responsibility, appreciation of the environment and personal development such as improved self-esteem
The Oregon Youth Conservation Corps builds on the strong connections between positive work experiences, work skills, personal responsibility, commitment to education and future employment for youth.
OYCC was established by the Oregon Legislature to:
- protect, conserve, rehabilitate and improve the natural, historical and cultural resources of Oregon; and
- to increase educational, training and employment opportunities for youth, for the purpose of improving work skills, instilling work ethic and increasing employability.
OYCC IMPROVES OREGON’S ENVIRONMENT, ITS PEOPLE AND ADDRESSES OREGON’S BENCHMARKS
Youth corps members work on projects such as:
- Construction of trails, boat docks, disability access ramps, fences and picnic tables
- Restoration/Preservation of wetlands, stream banks, endangered species and other wildlife habitat, and historical and cultural sites
- Maintaining all of the above after wind, floods, fire or normal use
- Plus plantings, water quality testing, removing non-native plants and weeds, watershed work, managing nurseries, landscaping, mapping, surveying and recycling and community stewardship projects
Youth with strong work skills, positive future education and employment goals are more likely to achieve two important Oregon Benchmarks:
- completion of high school; and
- avoidance of juvenile crime delinquency
OYCC has a nine-member Advisory Committee, three members appointed by the Governor, three appointed by the Senate President and three appointed by the House Speaker.
