Crime in Oregon -- Comparing Oregon Counties
Maps, Graphs, and Tables; Comparing Oregon Counties

This Page Facilitates Comparisons of Oregon Counties by Crime Rates. There are four parts.
  • Part 1 allows the selection of up to three counties for comparison based on crime rates. Each option displays a graph of changes over the past decade and a table of the underlying data. There are two options from which to choose. Please note that your browser must be set to accept temporary (per session) cookies in order to display the graphs on these pages.
  1. Compare the counties based upon rates for specific crimes,
  2. Compare the counties based upon rates for the summary crime groups,
  • Part 2 allows the ranking of all counties in a table for a single year based upon choice of crime types.
  1. Compare all counties ranked by specific crime rate for reported offenses, arrests, or juvenile arests,
  2. Compare all counties ranked by summary crime rate for reported offenses, arrests, or juvenile arests.

Part 1: Comparing up to three counties graphically.

There are two options here: How do the selected Oregon counties compare by specific crimes or by summary rates for Reported Offenses, Arrests, or Juvenile Arrests?

Use this query to generate graphs and tables of reported offense or arrest rates for up to three Oregon counties and statewide. The generated graph will show the rates for offenses or arrests as reported to the Law Enforcement Data System by local agencies. For purposes of comparison, the statewide rate is also presented. The accompanying table will also present the reported number of offenses or arrests.

Please read the cautionary note at the bottom of this page before drawing conclusions about the relative rates of crime in Oregon counties from the data presented here.

To select multiple counties (not more than three, please) in Windows, hold down the "Control" key while selecting counties. On the Macintosh, use the "Apple" key. Linux users may be able to just click to select multiple counties. Please note that if you select more than three counties, the others (in alphabetical order) will be ignored.

Part 2: Comparing all counties in a table for a specific year.

The counties may be ranked by rates for specific crimes, or by rates for the summary crime groups.

How Are All Oregon Counties Ranked by Specific Crimes?

Use this query to generate a table of reported offense or arrest rates by Oregon county and statewide. Generated tables will show the total number of reports for offenses or arrests as reported to the Law Enforcement Data System by local agencies. Also shown are the corresponding rates as the number of reports per 10,000 population. The table can be ordered by county, rate, or juvenile arrest rate.

For purposes of comparison, the statewide rate is also presented in the tables. For juveniles, only arrest data is available. Hence, if one chooses "Offenses" ordered by "Juvenile Rate," the table will be ordered by total rate, instead.
First select the UCR Crime: Then select Reported Offenses or Arrests:
Reported Offenses     Reported Arrests
Rank by County, Rate, or Juvenile Rate; Select the year; And then click on "Create Table."

How Are All Oregon Counties Ranked by Summary Crime Groups?

Use this query to generate a table of reported offenses or arrests by Oregon county and statewide. Generated tables will show the total number of reports for offenses or arrests as reported to the Law Enforcement Data System by local agencies for the summary groups of crimes. Also shown are the corresponding rates as the number of reports per 10,000 population. The table can be ordered by county or rate.

Alternatively, one may choose to display reported juvenile arrests for the same crime groups. In this case, the generated tables will show the total number of reported juvenile arrests for the summary groups of crimes. Also shown are the corresponding rates as the number of reports per 10,000 population age 0-17.
First select  Reported Offenses,     Arrests, or     Juvenile Arrests and then
Rank by County or Rate; Select the year; And then click on "Create Table."

Part 3: Comparing all counties in a table ranked by change in crime rate. How Are All Oregon Counties Ranked by Change in Crime Rates?

Use this query to generate a table of changes in the reported offense rates, reported arrest rates, or juvenile arrest rate by Oregon county. Generated tables will show the rates as the number of reports per 10,000 population (or just the 0-17 year old population).
For purposes of comparison, the statewide rate is also presented in the tables. For juveniles, only arrest data is available.
First select the UCR Crime or the Summary Crime Group (at bottom of list), Then select All Reported Offenses, All Reported Arrests, or Juvenile Arrests:
Select the beginning year and the ending years, whether to sort by county or rate change, and then click on "Create Table."

A Cautionary Note on the Comparison of Oregon Counties by Reported Crime Rates.

Please note that "reported offenses" does not give a full and accurate accounting of crime rates, so comparing counties based on this statistic can give an inaccurate impression of how the actual incidence of crime may vary. Many offenses are never reported to law enforcement agencies, and the degree to which reporting occurs varies tremendously by type of crime. Further, little is known about how the number of reports correlate with the actual occurrence of crime or the factors that influence reporting. Since reporting may vary by geographic and unknown social factors, comparing counties by reported rates is a first step to determining variations in crime rates, but it is only the first.

Reported arrest rates are a step further removed from measuring the actual incidence of crime. Arrest rates directly reflect enforcement priorities and the availability of resources for enforcement as well as the incidence of crime. Arrest rates are also affected by changing approaches to enhancing public safety. This is a factor which may vary greatly from one jurisdiction to another, may change over time, and will certainly vary tremendously by crime.
