This page is designed to answer basic questions about the use of weapons in the commission of violent crimes in Oregon.
Local law enforcement agencies report complaints and arrests for crimes in Oregon to the Law Enforcement Data System of the Oregon State Police. Summaries of these reports are published annually. For certain crimes, information is reported on the type of weapon or "force element" involved. In this section, a query based on user input generates a chart or table from this data.
Data from all law enforcement agencies in the state are not always available, or may be incomplete. Anomalous data may be the result of incomplete reporting, and not all crimes are reported to police agencies. A summary of known gaps in reporting is available by clicking here.
What weapons or "force elements" are used in the commission of these crimes?
Use this query to generate a line graph or an "accumulated line plot" of reported offenses statewide. In most cases, the tabular data displayed is the same regardless of the type of graph chosen. Data displayed in tables may also be selected, copied, and pasted to a spreadsheet or other file on the user's computer for further analysis. An "accumulated line plot" adds each successive data point to the one below, so the top line gives the combined total. Generated line graphs and tables will show the number of reports for the use of the specified weapon in the commission of the chosen offense.
The "percent of crimes" option generates a line graph showing the number of reported offenses involving the specified weapon and the percent of all of those offenses reported as having been committed with that weapon. These values do not always total 100% across all weapons ("force elements") due to incomplete reporting of this data.
If, for the crime of interest, you choose "All of the Above Crimes," the name of the crime on the generated graph or table will be "All Five Crimes."
