DBMS and Data Management - Various Products
Data Base Management System (DBMS) software controls the organization, storage, retrieval, security and integrity of data in a database. It accepts requests form the application and instructs the operating system to transfer the appropriate data. Data Management software is defined in this catalog as software that manipulates data content. This is distinct from Storage Management software, which is defined in this catalog as software that manipulates data objects, (e.g., files, folders, volumes, etc.) but does not provide access to data content.
The major products that the SDC supports in this classification are:

| SDC Responsibilities |
|
-
Acquire product and manage licenses and license compliance
- Install on SDC-managed hardware platform, configure and test for system-level functionality
- Maintain current product release levels[1]
- Manage DBA privileges and DBA access
- Define and manage physical resources needed by product (i.e., buffer pools, catalogs, log files, archive files, and tablespaces)
- Provide storage space for data base use
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune environments for optimum performance and availability on all environments
- Consult with vendor technical support staff to escalate issues that cannot be resolved internally
- Notify customer of requested customer and SDC upgrades and changes
- Patch and upgrade products
- Ensure data base backup and recovery integrity for all associated data base files
- Plan aggregate database capacity needs based on historical usage patterns and customer needs projections
[1] SDC policy on supported software versions will be developed at a later time

 |
| Customer Responsibilities |
|
-
Determine which users will have access to the product(s)
- Design, create define relationships, and execute processes for full life cycle of logical data structures including relational data base tables, IMS data bases, data base views, stored procedures, indexes, program specification blocks in all environments (e.g., development, test, production)
- Define and implement security requirements within the data base or data structure including managing user-level security for access to data
- Define availability requirements
- Perform data loads, migrations, conversions, and reorganizations
- Provide aggregated disk space requirements and estimates of expected growth
- Define backup requirements for data bases and schedule or arrange for data base backup and restore jobs as required
- Evaluate and test DBMS and Data Management product fixes, patches, and upgrades
- Perform impact analysis of proposed DBMS upgrades and changes on the customer’s applications and end-user commitments
- Test new DBMS functions prior to release into production
- Coordinate schedules for DBMS upgrades and changes so that important customer activities (e.g., application rollouts, application upgrades, training sessions or live service) are not affected
- Ensure data integrity when databases are restored or recovered
- It is recommended that customers utilize a data dictionary to simplify coordination
