Directory software provides a means for accessing stored information about the various users, applications, files, printers, servers, and other resources accessible from a network.

“Directories allow users or applications to find resources that have the characteristics needed for a particular task. For example, a directory of users can be used to look up a person's e-mail address or fax number. A directory could be searched to find a nearby PostScript color printer. Or a directory of application servers could be searched to find a server that can access customer billing information.”

Directory management of customer resources is out of scope for the SDC, but the SDC is dependent upon its customer’s directory applications to give SDC staff appropriate rights and access to required functions on all SDC-managed servers.

SDC Responsibilities

  1. Acquire product and manage licenses and license compliance for directory software
  2. Install directory software on SDC-managed hardware platform with a basic configuration and test for basic operation (i.e., startup, shutdown, exercise toolbars and major commands)
  3. Manage SDC shared services directory maintaining policies, rules and objects.
  4. Synchronize trusted rights between the SDC directory and the agencies directories.
  5. Manage administrator privileges and administrator access
  6. Work with customer to configure and maintain an LDAP-compatible directory which provides security and the ability to manage user rights and access to functions on all servers in the customer’s network domain
  7. Define and manage any associated log and archive files (e.g., monitor space; appropriately secure; extract customer-specific messages in a shared environment on request)
  8. Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune environments for optimum performance and availability
  9. Consult with vendor technical support staff to escalate issues that cannot be resolved internally
  10. Notify customer’s of requested customer and SDC upgrades to directory products
  11. Patch and upgrade directory products

Customer Responsibilities

  2. Provide directory management for any functions involving objects, policies, access, and rights for normal (.i.e., not having extraordinary access rights like Global Sysadmin) users, workstations, printers, etc.
  3. Configure the product for customer use in consultation with SDC technicians. Configuration tasks requiring broad systems authorizations (e.g., global sysadmin, SYSTEM) will be performed by the SDC
  4. Define user and groups
  5. Review content of logs and reports that show unauthorized or suspicious activity
  6. Perform impact analysis of proposed changes on customer’s applications and customer end-user commitments
  7. Test new functions and capabilities prior to general release to customer users
  8. Coordinate schedules of upgrades and product releases so that important customer activities (e.g., application rollouts, application upgrades, training sessions or live service) are not affected by the changes
