An application server is a software product that presents a package of functions built from programs or modules to a user.  For web servers, this package is a set of web pages. 
 
The major products that the SDC supports in this classification are:

SDC Responsibilities

  1. Acquire product and manage licenses and license compliance
  2. Install on SDC-managed hardware platform with a basic configuration and test for basic operation (i.e., startup, shutdown, exercise toolbars and major commands)
  3. Maintain current product release levels[1]
  4. Manage administration privileges and administrator access
  5. Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune development, test, and production environments for optimum performance and availability
  6. Migrate or install objects created for deployment with this product into production (e.g., application packages, web sites)
  7. Consult with vendor technical support staff to escalate issues that cannot be resolved internally
  8. Notify customers of requested customer and SDC upgrades and changes
  9. Patch and upgrade products

Customer Responsibilities

  1. Determine which users will have access to the product(s)
  2. Configure the product for customer use in consultation with SDC technicians (note: configuration tasks requiring broad systems authorizations (e.g., global sysadmin, SYSTEM) will be performed by the SDC)
  3. Define and implement security requirements within the applications that use these products including setting up and managing user access to these products and applications running under these products
  4. Develop, code, test, and debug applications and web pages to be deployed through the web or application server product
  5. Monitor application package-level performance
  6. Provide estimates of resource utilization and expected growth (i.e., CPU, RAM, disk space, and network bandwidth), in terms of expected user hits per day, and average amount of data transferred per hit
  7. Perform impact analysis of proposed changes on customer’s applications and end-user commitments
  8. Test new functionality prior to going into production
  9. Coordinate schedules so that important customer activities (e.g., application rollouts, application upgrades, training sessions or live service) are not affected by the changes
