State Data Center Tier III Certification

State Achieves Tier III Certification

The state of Oregon meets Tier III certification design standards from Uptime Institute. The Uptime Institute’s classification system creates a benchmark for reliable data center infrastructure design. Tier III standards find the State Data Center (SDC) facility a vast improvement over the current data center environment.

From the start of design, SDC’s goal met these standards to provide system availability at 99.982 percent.  DAS Facilities, through the state procurement process, contracted with a design/build team* experienced in data center construction.  On March 15, 2005, ComputerSite Engineering, hired for design and audit and empowered by Uptime Institute, confirmed the SDC met Tier III standards.

There is a large body of engineering work that goes into designing building systems. Any one component can be removed for replacement or repair without interrupting service. These systems include: air conditioning, power supply, water supply, communications, and all components that regulate these systems.

For the SDC, this means:
  • Any of the air handlers can shut down with no impact
  • Power lines can go down and full power remains
  • Power lines and one of the generators can go down and full power remains
  • Any section or valve of chilled water pipe can break and the cooling system remains fully functional.
Redundant paths and systems, and the ability to remove systems for maintenance—without service interruption—are design strategies SDC customers rely upon.
