Overview
This summary of CNIC work group activities for the period of March 2006 is intended as a brief synopsis of the activities of various CNIC work groups.

Agency migration of servers into the State Data Center began in the month of March. The first moves were a series of pilot moves for DAS, DHS and ODOT, with additional moves planned through June 30. The status of migration is being communicated on a weekly basis via a scorecard posted to the CNIC Web site. The scorecard lists the status of various activities planned for each migrating agency and the CNIC Project Office. More on agency migration is included in the updates below for each technical area.

The CNIC Project is managed by Julie Bozzi, PMP, SDC Plans and Controls manager.

Network
The Engineering Network Team is managed by Al Grapoli, SDC Network Manager.

March activities included working with Verizon regarding cabling needs for the SDC command center and south side of the data center floor, configuring firewalls for production traffic, completing the SDC wireless LAN design report, and installing fiber cable trays. There has also been a significant amount of production testing of the open source network management server (scheduled to be complete in early April).

The Engineering Team is also working closely with agency server migration teams, as hardware is installed and connected to the core and distribution portions of the SDC network.

Server
The Server Implementation Team is led by both Randy Whitehouse, SDC Distributed Systems Support manager, and Jim Long, SDC Enterprise Systems Support manager. The common variety of servers are under Randy, while enterprise-sized servers (IBM and Sun) are under Jim.

In addition to assisting with individual agency migration of servers to the SDC (approximately 100 servers during March alone), this team has been involved in receiving and provisioning new servers for the SDC. These servers (HP Proliant and IBM pSeries) are a key component of achieving greater operational efficiencies once the migration of existing agency equipment is complete and data center staff begin working on consolidation. Activities underway include:
  • Installation of rack-mounted KVM consoles.
  • Provisioning of IBM pSeries servers.

Mainframe
The Mainframe Implementation Team is led by Jim Long, Enterprise Systems Support Manager.

March activities of the Mainframe team included the following:
  • Mainframe channel and port configuration.
  • Connection of DAS, DHS and ODOT mainframes to the newly provisioned automated tape library at the SDC.
  • Development of tape library procedures (in process).
  • Creation of the Mainframe Agency Scorecard and Agency Move Binder (templates for agency use in planning mainframe migration).
  • Confirmed that using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) conversion for SDC analog service is not a satisfactory solution.
  • Mainframe RFP contract awarded to Mainline.

Storage
The Storage Implementation Team is led by Deanna Dyer, interim Storage manager of the SDC.

Storage team accomplishments for March:
  • Receipt and provisioning of new automated tape library (ATL).
    • This includes connectivity to SDC network and external testing.
    • Preparation of library configuration.
    • Planning for data transfer.
      • DAS and DHS are now writing all tape jobs to the SDC.
      • ODOT testing has begun.
  • Completion of disk storage design.
  • Receipt and provisioning of Hitachi disk storage.
  • Planning for tape migration of DHS open systems.

Operations
The Operations Implementation Team is led by Bryan Nealy, interim Operations manager of the SDC. The Operations team is chartered to address the details of bringing the SDC to a fully operational state.

March activities included the following:
  • Initiating the procurement process for the command center.
  • Finalizing power-connectivity requirements for the south side of data center floor.
  • Defining requirements for a video display wall (preparing for the procurement process).
  • Defining command center processes.
  • Finalizing SDC provisioning, i.e., ensuring data center readiness for the migration of servers.
  • Working on power and connectivity issues for various pieces of equipment and servers.

Agency Migration Planning
The Agency Migration Planning team is responsible for coordinating the moves of all agency equipment into the SDC. Project manager Sarah Miller leads the agency migration process. The following summary reflects information on the planning efforts for the first agencies to migrate to the SDC - DAS, DHS, ODOT, and some components of the Employment Department.

Activities and accomplishments during the month of March:
  • DAS, DHS and ODOT launched pilot server moves.
    • Subsequent "waves" of server moves are in process.
    • The number of servers moved through April 7 is 127.
  • Completion of all "prepare and assess" documentation for DAS, DHS and ODOT.
  • Master agency migration schedule completed.
  • Kick-off meeting held with iSeries agencies to walk through migration planning documents.
  • Finalizing migration planning templates (utilizing lessons learned from first three agencies) for subsequent agency planning activities.

Change Management
Organizational and Individual Change Management
The Change Management Work Group is facilitated by ODOT Project Manager Claudia Light. The charter of the Change Management group is to support agency staff and managers in managing the changes brought by the CNIC project.

The focus of this team during the month of March was development of a cultural enablement plan to be presented to the management team of the SDC. The work group will recommend specific activities and processes to enable a dynamic culture among the staff of the data center. Presentation of the enablement plan represents a transition activity as the responsibilities of this work group are transferred to the SDC, the fulfillment of the work group charter.
