Overview
This summary of CNIC work group activities for the period of April 2006 reflects activities and accomplishments at a high level.

Agency migration of servers into the State Data Center continued on schedule through the month of April. One agency, Housing and Community Services, now has 100 percent of its operations migrated to the data center. DAS, DHS and ODOT are well on their way to completing migration by June 30. The status of migration is being communicated on a weekly basis via a scorecard posted to the CNIC Web site. The scorecard lists the status of various activities planned for each migrating agency and the CNIC Project Office. For more on migration see the Agency Migration Planning section below.

The CNIC Project is managed by Julie Bozzi, PMP, SDC Deputy Administrator, Plans and Controls.

Network
The Engineering Network Team is managed by Al Grapoli, SDC Network Manager.

The following represents the team's April activities and accomplishments:
  • Completed initial production testing of the open source network management server.
  • Completed installation of fiber cable trays in the network hub (MPOE) and data center.
  • Continued work on Checkpoint firewalls (for production).
  • Relocated staff serving on job rotations.
The Engineering team is also contributing a significant amount of time to agency server migration as hardware is installed and connected to the core and distribution portions of the SDC network.

Server
The Server Implementation Team is led by both Randy Whitehouse, SDC Distributed Systems Support manager, and Jim Long, SDC Enterprise Systems Support manager. The common variety of servers is under Randy, while enterprise-sized servers (IBM and Sun) are under Jim.

April activities centered on assisting agencies with server migration and provisioning new equipment such as:
  • Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) switches.
  • KVM consoles.
  • Two IBM AIX servers (p590s).
    • Full installation is still underway; this includes configuring and testing of the AIX operating system, interfaces and services.
A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a solutions provider of engineering services and data center grade servers  has been posted to the Oregon Procurement Information Network. Evaluation of the responses to the RFQ will facilitate the development of a Request for Proposal (RFP).

Mainframe
The Mainframe Implementation Team is led by Jim Long, Enterprise Systems Support Manager.

April was a milestone month for the mainframe team with delivery of the new IBM mainframe (z990) more than 10 days ahead of schedule. Team activities included the following:
  • Kickoff meetings were held with the four agencies planning to migrate mainframe operations to the data center (DAS, DHS, OED and ODOT).
  • Several communications meetings were held with the mainframe vendor (Mainline) including technical and business-program management.
  • The vendor achieved "Code 20" - the official handoff to the state of Oregon following the vendor's certification of mainframe readiness.
  • The IBM 2074 controller was installed.
  • Configuring the new mainframe was launched after Code 20. This includes HMC setups, IODF build, LPAR configuration, connecting to SDC network, console configurations and external connectivity testing.

Storage
The Storage Implementation Team is led by Deanna Dyer, interim Storage manager of the SDC.

The new disk storage system was available by mid-April with the Storage Area Network (SAN) available by April 28. This system availability launched the process of agency tape library data migration which was completed by the end of the month. Additional April activities and accomplishments:
  • Installing and configuring the Hitachi USP.
  • Connecting the new disk storage system to the SDC network.
  • Completing external connectivity tests.
  • Configuring the disk.
  • Completing a disk storage data transfer plan.
  • The team also began work on configuring Open Tech software for DHS, ODOT and DAS.

Operations
The Operations Implementation Team is led by Bryan Nealy, Operations manager of the SDC. The Operations team is chartered to address the details of bringing the SDC to a fully operational state.

April was a very busy month for the Operations team as more agency systems and operations were migrated to the SDC. Activities and accomplishments included the following:
  • Provisioning the command center included work on a Request for Proposals for the video wall, determining the vendor for furniture and the layout design, and ordering consoles.
  • Provisioning  was completed on the south side of the data center floor for tape library, some network and Sun servers, identity and access management servers, and AIX.
  • An additional 40 server racks were received and installed.
  • Cable management guidelines were completed.
  • A runbook template was prepared.
  • The keyboard-video-mouse consoles were ordered, received and installation plan developed.

Agency Migration Planning
The Agency Migration Planning team is responsible for coordinating the moves of all agency equipment into the SDC. Project manager Sarah Miller leads the agency migration process.

By April 30, over 250 agency servers had been moved to the SDC without disrupting agency business. Most waves occurred during off hours (evenings and weekends) to minimize disruption. The following are details of the significant agency accomplishments in April related to migration:
  • Administrative Services
    • Successfully moved 65 percent of servers to the SDC.
    • 100 percent complete with tape storage migration.
    • Network and mainframe operations moved to SDC.
    • Planning for mainframe migration underway.
  • Housing and Community Services - successfully moved 100 percent of servers to the SDC.
  • Human Services
    • Successfully moved 25 percent of servers to the SDC.
    • 100 percent complete with tape migration.
    • Planning for mainframe migration underway.
  • Transportation
    • Successfully moved 50 percent of ODOT servers to SDC.
    • 100 percent complete with tape migration.
    • 30 percent complete with storage system migration.
    • Planning for mainframe migration underway.
