(Infrastructure Technician)

$3,947 - $5,700 MONTHLY


The Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is seeking to fill a permanent, full time ISS5 position located in Salem within the Operations section of the State Data Center (SDC). The purpose of this recruitment is to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.  This position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)/Oregon Public Employees Union (OPEU).
 
The State Data Center (SDC), house within the Department of Administrative Services (DAS), is an enterprise shared services organization, which develops and operates the state’s computing and network infrastructure.  The SDC’s mission is to enable and support business goals and objectives of its customers by providing high quality, cost-effective computing and networking services. 
 
TO QUALIFY
 
Your State of Oregon Application form (PD100) and cover letter will be reviewed to verify that you meet the qualifications and desired attributes stated in this section.  To receive credit, your application form and cover letter must clearly show that you have:
  • Three years of professional consultative, technical or administrative experience designing, constructing, or analyzing information systems.  Must have knowledge of the principles of server hardware and network fundamentals, operating systems, software standards and either:
  • (a) at least 30 quarter (20 semester) credits in computer science; or (b) two more years of experience providing knowledge of information systems theory and principles. OR
  • 15 quarter hour (10 semesters) graduate level computer science, software engineering, information systems, or equivalent credits may substitute for one year of professional experience.  To receive credit for coursework, you must submit a copy of your transcripts.

WORKING CONDITIONS
 
Normal office environment working at a computer terminal.  Manage projects with conflicting requirements and tight deadlines.  Business needs may require working irregular hours (24/7, weekends, evening, holiday, and travel for job related purposes).
 
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
 
To successfully meet the challenges of this position, ideal candidates should have work experience demonstrating the following:
  • Experience with server hardware support.
  • Experience tracking and managing hardware assets in a complex technical environment.
  • Solid technical background in current technologies, system and process development methods, and the use of computing resources at all levels.
  • Knowledge of the principles of server hardware fundamentals, operating systems, and software standards and the impact to statewide customers.
  • Ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical customers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The primary purpose of this position is to provide expert customer service to document and resolve technical issues in a Service Desk setting for internal and external customers of the State Data Center.  Major duties include but are not limited to the following:
  1. Customer Assistance:  Coordinate all requests for server hardware.  Work with a variety of technical staff to determine business needs, existing capacity and best use of available hardware.  Research recurring and widespread problems with hardware.  Ensure critical timelines are met.  Initiate emergency trouble calls to vendors, conduct formal training, analyze error codes and diagnostic messages, use external contacts, replace cards and perform moderate physical repairs.
  2. Construction:  Identify and solve conflicting system and version issues.  Integrate changes and monitor system performance.  Ensure interfaces are operational.  Consider security issues, costs and performance factors.  Coordinate medium to large projects.  Evaluate vendor proposals.   Establish an asset classification system within software.   Implement documented standards within software.  Maintain updates to software and coordinate issues with vendors.  Work with vendor on necessary updates to software.   
  3. Planning:  Select, test, and evaluate existing and new systems that support the Service Desk; assess impact to existing and future workflow.  Ensure security measure is taken to secure appropriate information.  Write small project plans and work with appropriate resources.  Evaluate a variety of applications and operating systems for state agencies.  Perform disaster planning to ensure service restoration as needed.  Develop asset and attribute structure.
