Key enrollment dates

  • Annual enrollment for Medicare Advantage plans and prescription drug coverage: This is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this period, you can compare plans and change coverage.

  • Annual disenrollment period (when you can drop a Medicare Advantage plan): Jan. 1 to Feb. 14. During this period, you can drop a Medicare Advantage plan and switch to Original Medicare. If you do this, you can add a prescription drug plan.

  • Five stars: Medicare uses a rating system to recognize Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans that provide better quality to members. From Dec. 8, 2013, through Nov. 30, 2014, you have one opportunity to drop the plan you are in and switch to a five-star Medicare drug plan or five-star Medicare Advantage plan.
