General Tips for Making Public Comments

Here's information to help make your public comment the most effective and successful as possible:

  • DEQ’s focus is on the quality of comments, not the quantity. One person raising an issue carries the same weight as ten people raising the issue, or 100 people.
  •
  • Written comments carry the same weight as spoken comments.
  •
  • Avoid repeating what has already been said.
  •
  • Comments that are outside of the hearing’s scope, or DEQ’s regulatory authority, will be acknowledged as received but not given a response nor considered as part of the decision-making process.
  •
  • If a permit application complies with all relevant state laws, DEQ is required to issue the permit. Similarly, if a permit application cannot meet state regulations, DEQ will not issue the permit.
  •
  • Research and review the draft permit and report before commenting. Know what it says, and what it does not say.
  •
  • Stay on topic. DEQ can only consider comments that address conditions in the draft permit.
