Don't Trash that TV or Computer! DEQ Can Help with Oregon E-Cycles
Computer in trashcan
Effective Jan. 1, 2010, it is illegal to dispose of computers, laptops, monitors or TVs in Oregon. The ban prohibits disposal of these items in the garbage or at disposal sites such as landfills, transfer stations and incinerators.

The disposal ban is part of the same law that created Oregon E-Cycles, which provides free recycling of computers, monitors and TVs at any of the program's 220 collection sites statewide. Violators of the ban could be penalized up to $500 for each violation. Each computer, monitor or TV disposed of improperly is considered a separate violation.

Visit Oregon E-Cycles to find a nearby collection site to recycle computers, laptops, TVs and monitors, or call the toll-free hotline at 1-888-5-ECYCLE (1-888-532-9253).

Neither the ban nor Oregon E-Cycles covers computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, etc.,) or other types of electronics, but DEQ encourages recycling of these items too. Oregon E-Cycles offers a partial list of other electronics recyclers.

Current Issues
DEQ's Pollution Control Requirements at PGE Boardman
In June 2009, the Environmental Quality Commission adopted the Oregon Regional Haze Plan that includes stringent pollution controls for Portland General Electric's coal-fired power plant near Boardman. The rules require PGE to install stringent emission controls on the Boardman power plant in two phases.
DEQ Proposing Rule to Set Trigger Levels for Surface Water Pollutants
Oregon DEQ is proposing a rule that will set numeric "trigger levels" for many of the 118 recently designated toxic pollutants that could potentially discharge into surface waters around the state. These trigger levels would prompt more than 50 municipal treatment facilities statewide to develop plans spelling out how they will reduce their discharge of pollutants found in effluent above the trigger level.
Complaint/Pollution Reporting Form
Now it's easier to file a pollution complaint for DEQ to investigate with our new online fillable form. To report a spill or environmental emergency, contact the Oregon Emergency Response System at 1-800-452-0311.
