5/11/2023Lane County 2020 wildfire survivors achieve major recovery milestone enabling closure of the ODHS long-term shelter program
(Salem, OR) – On April 28, 2023, the last of the 2020 wildfire survivors were able to move out of the ODHS shelter into a permanent or long-term home of their own. In all, 423 people received shelter, and 193,080 meals were delivered in Lane County.

5/10/2023ODHS will begin replacing SNAP benefits for victims of electronic theft on May 22
(Salem, OR) – Starting May 22, ODHS will begin replacing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for victims of electronic theft who have had benefits stolen from their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. Electronic theft includes card skimming, card cloning and other similar methods.

(Tillamook, OR) – To help Tillamook County prepare for a Cascadia earthquake event, the ODHS Office of Resilience and Emergency Management delivered two large, portable cargo containers filled with emergency relief supplies and equipment to the Tillamook Municipal Airport.

4/13/2023Oregon State Rehabilitation Council meets May 5 in Bend and on Zoom
(Salem, OR) - The Oregon State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) meets 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 5 in Bend, with virtual attendance available on Zoom. The council works to ensure Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is consumer driven and that available programs, services and resources result in competitive integrated employment.
4/10/2023Deadline extended and funding increased for community-based organizations to support youth experiencing homelessness
(Salem, OR) – ODHS is inviting community partners to apply for a portion of $18.75 million in grant funding that is now available to provide services and housing supports to youth experiencing homelessness. The deadline has been extended to April 21.

(Salem, OR) – Since Dec. 31, 2020, ODHS has been providing long-term shelter in Jackson County to survivors of the 2020 Labor Day wildfires. With the support of multiple organizations, on March 23, the last of these survivors were able to move out of ODHS shelter into their own home.

These emergency food benefits were provided to help people who receive SNAP get enough healthy food for themselves and their families during the COVID-19 emergency.

9/26/2022People with disabilities and older adults can, and should, take concrete steps to prepare before the next disaster for a better recovery
(Salem, OR) – “From a house fire to major earthquakes, taking simple steps to be prepared can be the difference between survival and recovery from a disaster,” said Ed Flick, director of the Oregon Department of Human Services’ Office of Resilience and Emergency Management. “Unfortunately, older adults, people with disabilities, and those on fixed incomes are the ones we often read about who weren’t able to prepare for emergencies or evacuate. We aim to change that as soon as possible.”

Of those who experienced abuse, 76% did not report it, according to a study commissioned by the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS).

(Salem, OR) –  In April, some SNAP households will see a change to their benefit amount for emergency allotments (EA). The federal government has provided emergency allotments since March 2020, to give SNAP recipients additional support during the COVID-19 pandemic. SNAP households have received EA in an amount equal to the maximum benefit for the household size, minus their monthly base benefit. But this means households that are at or near the maximum SNAP benefit were receiving little or no additional support.
