This employment opportunity is with Oregon State Hospital (OSH), which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS).  There are two full-time openings located the Food and Nutrition Services Department in Salem. 

These positions are Management Service and not represented by a union.

This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as needed in Salem or Portland.

INTRODUCTION

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state.  Inpatient services are currently licensed at 681 beds on 19 hospital units and residential services at 96 beds on 4 units.  OSH also offers community outreach services, specialized evaluations, and has a consumer support office. 

The Oregon State Hospital Food and Nutrition Services Department (FNS) is responsible for providing balanced, nutritious, healthful and appropriate meals for patients in the care of the hospital.  FNS is responsible for the procurement, production, timely delivery and service of meals and snacks.  The Department is additionally responsible for the assessment of specific patient nutritional needs, preparation of nutritional care plans that meet those unique needs, follow up and educational services.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree with specialization in dietetics, nutrition, institution management, or a closely-related field and completion of an internship in dietetics at an approved hospital. You must provide proper documentation specifying the location, duration and completion of your internship.
 
NOTE: Preference may be given to candidates who are Registered Dietician’s and have experience working in a mental health setting; or to candidates who are registration eligible and/or able to complete the registration process within 6 months of hire.

  • Please describe your experience and knowledge in ‘Community Education.’ Please include in your response your work experience in developing appropriate nutritional education materials for patients with multiple levels of learning.
  • Describe in detail your experience, knowledge and training/education on metabolic syndrome. Please include in you answer your level of and length of experience working with and applying the current guidelines for identifying the symptoms and treatment for patients with metabolic syndrome. Please be sure to give specific examples.
  • The person in this position utilizes Microsoft and other computer applications on a daily basis.  Describe your skills and experience utilizing MS Word, Excel, and Email (e.g. GroupWise) applications.  Include all software you have used and briefly give an example of projects and ongoing responsibilities using these applications.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position provides individual assessment and counseling for patients nutritional needs, with focused attention on the risk assessment and treatment of metabolic syndrome, to assist in the management of health and wellness and to contribute to the over-all treatment plan for individuals in the care of the OSH.  This position analyzes patient dietary needs and provides individual and group education as well as professional input into menus and special diets served.  The Clinical Dietitian is part of the Food and Nutrition Services Management Team and actively participates in the over-all management of the department. Major duties include:

The person in this position document’s nutritional status of patients; Evaluates risk for metabolic syndrome;

Provides nutritional education to interdisciplinary team and line staff to facilitate implementation of nutritional care plans; Prepares home diet plans as needed;

Discharge education: provides discharge consultations to patient and/or their family/caregivers as needed; Determines educational needs based on clinical nutritional assessment, and provides individual or group nutritional counseling at an appropriate level for patient;
Works as part of a clinical team to develop treatment protocols for patients with, or at high risk for, metabolic syndrome;

Participates in menu development to create a general menu, which will meet the nutritional needs of the majority of patients and ensure the nutritional needs of the individuals with metabolic syndrome are met; Also assists in development of therapeutic diets for those patients with significant medical or psychological factors that require specialized meal plans; Completes evaluations of meal palatability and appearance;

Participates as a member of the FNS Management team to determine direction, responsibility, department policy and procedures, assigns staff and resources, menu planning, day-to-day operations, and other decision-making as appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Will be working daily on the wards with psychiatric patients and in the FNS Department with prison inmate workers and patient workers.

Will work in or be exposed to varied temperature conditions.

Will walk on varied floor surfaces.

This position is a mandatory reporter.

Work hours are subject to change with little notice.  May be required to work hours that exceed regular schedule, i.e., a double shift or a different shift in addition to regular schedule.
 
Travel. One of these positions also requires the abiliity to travel to Oregon State Hospital – Portland.
