This employment opportunity is with Addiction and Mental Health Services, Oregon State Hospital, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). This list will be used to fill full-time positions in the Acuity and Security Program (ASP). The ASP Mental Health Therapy Technician’s (MHHT) will be flexibly assigned to any unit, shift or program area on either the Salem or Portland campus. These positions are represented by a union.

INTRODUCTION

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state. Inpatient services are currently licensed at 700 hospital beds on 19 treatment units and 70 residential beds on 2 treatment units. OSH also offers community outreach services, specialized evaluations, and has a consumer support office.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The purpose of Mental Health Therapy Technician (MHTT) position is to provide basic care and treatment for mentally ill adults. The Acuity and Security Program (ASP) MHTT positions will serve a unique role in that they will be allocated to programs, units and shifts with demonstrated acuity and security needs beyond the capacity of the base assigned full-time employees. The ASP MHTT’s will be flexibly assigned to any unit, shift or program area on either the Salem or Portland campus. The ASP MHTT, like all MHTT’s, have a primary function to complete a variety of duties and tasks as assigned by the nurse and to provide for safety and security of patients and do related recording and reporting. Below are the following patient population programs:
Forensic Psychiatric Services includes a full array of clinical programs including evaluation of criminal responsibility and the ability to aid and assist in one’s own defense and patients who are adjudicated guilty but mentally ill and who are committed to the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB). It also serves patients with mental or emotional disturbances, cognitive skill deficits, substance abuse, and sex offenders. Three units provide treatment to PSRB patients who have shown substantial improvement in their condition and who require intensive specialized skill building in preparation for their discharge. Levels of security include maximum, medium, and minimum.
Psychiatric Recovery Services includes an adult treatment program and a geropsychiatric treatment program.
The Adult Treatment Program serves men and women over 18 years old with serious and persistent mental illness. Most patients are referred from acute care hospitals for continued treatment. This is the only program serving patients in Portland.
The Geropsychiatric Treatment Program serves older adults with psychiatric/medical disorders who require intensive nursing and psychiatric care not available in a less restrictive setting. One unit serves adults who are brain-injured or multiply disabled.
Major Duties Include:
Basic Patient Care: Monitor and/or assist patients in daily living skills and activities. Directly supervise all patients either in building or out of building. Recognize and report changes and trends in the patient condition, both physical and mental, obvious and subtle, which have relevance to the health status of the patients. Recognize actual and potential psychiatric/medical emergencies and initiate appropriate action. Provide complete personal and hygienic care to patients according to treatment care plan. Participate in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients. Escort patient during various off-ward activities. Float to other shifts/units as assigned.
Treatment: Review and have working knowledge of all patient treatment care plans. Display a working knowledge of behavior modification. Observe patient potential for violence and socially destructive behavior and intervene by redirecting or using other behavioral strategy according to the treatment care plan. Provide and maintain the therapeutic milieu by following the structure of activities of daily living on the unit with all the patients. Establish and maintain therapeutic boundaries with patients. Provide the appropriate sensory stimulation for patients as designed/developed by professional staff.
Safety and Security Measures: Receive calls and respond to all emergency situations throughout the hospital. Use approved restrictive interventions of patients when needed according to OSH policies. Make periodic ward checks during shift to ascertain patient whereabouts and security of unit environment. Assist in random searches of patient areas and the facility when requested. Do initial searches of patients for contraband and safety of unit milieu on admission and when indicated. Protect patients from other patients who present a threat to their safety. Closely monitor patients needing special precautions as assigned. Participate in debriefing after an unusual incident has occurred. Recognize and report potential safety hazards in relation to patients, staff, and environment. Escort patients off unit when assigned. Maintaining security procedures in transport.
Case Monitor: May temporarily be responsible for one non-complex patient under the supervision of the RN. Form primary relationship with and provide 1:1 treatment and role modeling for assigned patient(s). Spend time daily/weekly interacting with patients individually and in groups. Observe and document behaviors and the progress of assigned patients. Share information with the treatment team. Participate in the development and revision of Treatment Care Plans with other members of the IDT. Including proposals of revisions for assigned cases.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Care of patients with mental illness that are a danger to self or others. Daily exposure to potentially assaultive and aggressive patients, including those admitted to Forensic Psychiatric Services by criminal courts.
Must have basic computer skills and be willing to learn new technologies as they are introduced into the workplace.
Daily exposure to infectious diseases.
Work hours subject to change with little notice. May be required to work hours that exceed regular schedule, i.e. a double shift in addition to regular schedule.
Occasional driving or accompanying patients in motor vehicles. Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license with an acceptable driving record or the ability to provide an alternate approved method of transportation.
