This employment opportunity is with Addictions and Mental Health, Oregon State Hospital, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). This list will be used to fill full-time, part time and temporary positions as they occur. These positions are represented by a union.

Note: Please be aware that due to the economic downturn and subsequent state budget shortfall the Governor has ordered mandatory furloughs for employees. This position will be required to take furloughs in the biennium 2009-2011.
INTRODUCTION

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state. Inpatient services are currently licensed at 700 hospital beds on 19 treatment units and 70 residential beds on 2 treatment units. OSH also offers community outreach services, specialized evaluations, and has a consumer support office.
QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must have a current Oregon Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) registration.
Preference may be given to candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science or have completed a significant amount of college coursework in the behavioral sciences. To receive credit for a degree or college coursework, we ask that you submit a copy of your college transcripts with your application and test material.

· Employees in this classification provide basic physical care to patients who are mentally, emotionally, behaviorally, and/or physically impaired. · Employees in this classification deal with patients who may exhibit physically aggressive and/or verbally abusive behavior toward the staff or other patients. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Mental Health Therapy Technician provides physical care to adult, or elderly patients who are mentally, behaviorally and/or physically impaired. Employees in this classification are generally assigned to work in one of the following patient population programs:
Forensic Psychiatric Services (FPS) includes a full array of clinical programs including evaluation of criminal responsibility and the ability to aid and assist in one’s own defense and patients who are adjudicated guilty but mentally ill and who are committed to the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB). FPS also serves patients with mental or emotional disturbances, cognitive skill deficits, substance abuse, and sex offenders. Three units provide treatment to PSRB patients who have shown substantial improvement in their condition and who require intensive specialized skill building in preparation for their discharge. Levels of security include maximum, medium, and minimum.
Psychiatric Recovery Services includes an adult treatment program and a geropsychiatric treatment program.
The Adult Treatment Program serves men and women over 18 years old with serious and persistent mental illness. Most patients are referred from acute care hospitals for continued treatment.
The Geropsychiatric Treatment Program serves older adults with psychiatric/medical disorders who require intensive nursing and psychiatric care not available in a less restrictive setting. One unit serves adults who are brain-injured or multiply disabled.
Major Duties Include: Assists with lifting, moving, turning, and walking patients
After obtaining required training/certification, some employees may assist the Registered Nurse with medical care such as collecting specimens, measuring blood pressure, pulse, respiration and temperature;
After obtaining required training/certification, some employees may administer medications;
Assists with admitting and discharging patients to and from the wards;
Serves as a resource person for patients by attending to their basic physical, emotional and social needs such as assuring that patients have such personal items as soap, toothbrushes and shampoo and are bathed, groomed, properly clothed and fed
Escort patients off ward when assigned, maintaining security procedures in transport
Observes and records behavior: may be responsible for entering, retrieving, updating and deleting information from the computer system; documents patients' responses to treatment and shares the information with the treatment team; provides input for the changes in treatment programs
Spends time daily/weekly interacting with patients individually or as a group; and
Participate in verbal and physical interventions with patients as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS Must have basic computer skills and be willing to learn new technologies as they are introduced into the workplace.
Must be able to work more than 8 hours in a day and/or 40 hours in a week as required.
May require on-call and/or rotating schedules.
Work with patients with challenging and potentially assaultive behaviors.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently.
May transport patients or drive on state business. A valid Oregon driver’s license with acceptable driving record is required at the time of hire.
