This employment opportunity is with Addiction and Mental Health Services, Oregon State Hospital, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). This list will be used to fill full-time, part-time and temporary positions as they occur. These positions are represented by a union. This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur. NOTE: Please be aware that due to the economic downturn and subsequent state budget short-fall the Governor has ordered mandatory furloughs for employees. This position will be required to take furloughs in the biennium 2009-2011. INTRODUCTION DHS is a large, diverse organization with multiple goals and exceptionally broad department-wide programs. The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state. Inpatient services are currently licensed at 700 hospital beds on 19 treatment units and 70 residential beds on 2 treatment units. OSH also offers community outreach services, specialized evaluations, and has a consumer support office. QUALIFICATIONS Your PD100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications stated in this section. Your application form must clearly show that you have: You must have two years of experience working with mentally, emotionally, behaviorally, and/or physically impaired clients; AND you must have a current State of Oregon Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) registration. An Associate’s or a Bachelor’s degree in social science (such as social work, human services, psychology, child development, gerontology, health, or health education) may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Note: Some positions ALSO REQUIRE that you have a current certification as a Medication Aid (CMA) OR the ability to become certified as a Medication Aid (CMA) within six months of hire. Preference may be given to candidates who have a Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science or have completed a significant amount of college coursework in the behavioral sciences. Please describe your training and experience that has given you skill in: (a) providing specific treatment programs for assigned patients; (b) assisting with individual counseling and group therapy; and (c) assisting in, or conducting classes. Be specific in describing your training (use class titles); your responsibilities; and the patient population involved (child, adolescent, adult, elderly). • Employees in these positions observe and record behavior interventions; document trends; summarize notes of others; and review notes to see if they meet the goals of the treatment programs; etc. Please describe your training and experience that has given you skill in writing clear and concise observation notes, keeping documentation records, summarizing notes, and/or writing summary reports. Include any experience you have in interpreting notes related to a treatment program and any related courses or training (use class titles). Be specific as to your role and level of responsibilities for each experience listed. • The Mental Health Therapist 1 deals with patients who may exhibit physically aggressive and/or verbally abusive behavior toward staff or other patients. Please describe any training and/or experience that you have managing a patient acting out in this manner. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Mental Health Therapist 1, under the supervision of professional staff, participates in the development and implementation of individual treatment plans for adolescent, adult or elderly patients who are mentally, emotionally, behaviorally or physically impaired. Employees in this classification are generally assigned to work in one of the following patient population programs: Forensic Psychiatric Services (FPS) includes a full array of clinical programs including evaluation of criminal responsibility and the ability to aid and assist in one’s own defense and patients who are adjudicated guilty but mentally ill and who are committed to the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB). FPS also serves patients with mental or emotional disturbances, cognitive skill deficits, substance abuse, and sex offenders. Three units provide treatment to PSRB patients who have shown substantial improvement in their condition and who require intensive specialized skill building in preparation for their discharge. Levels of security include maximum, medium, and minimum. Psychiatric Recovery Services includes an adult treatment program and a geropsychiatric treatment program. The Adult Treatment Program serves men and women over 18 years old with serious and persistent mental illness. Most patients are referred from acute care hospitals for continued treatment. The Geropsychiatric Treatment Program serves older adults with psychiatric/medical disorders who require intensive nursing and psychiatric care not available in a less restrictive setting. One unit serves adults who are brain-injured or multiply disabled. Major Duties Include: Under the supervision of professional staff, co-lead classes in areas such as drug and alcohol abuse, assertiveness, human sexuality, independent living skills and personal effectiveness; Assist professional staff with individual counseling and group therapy; Provide activities for patients and work with professional staff to develop daily living skills and specific treatment programs for assigned patients; Serve as a resource person for a small group of assigned patients and work with professional staff to provide the consistency necessary for effective treatment and to provide patients with a specific staff member to whom they can relate and on whom they can rely; Become familiar with aspects of treatment plans as assigned and explain aspects of the treatment plan to assigned patients; Observe and document patient behavior and document patient progress in relation to goals and objectives of treatment plan; complete documentation requirements determined by the various programs for use by the treatment team. May be responsible for entering, retrieving, updating and deleting information from the computer system; Attend and participate in treatment team meetings to facilitate the flow of information regarding patients’ response to treatment and to provide input in developing or revising treatment programs for individual patients; Escort patients off ward when assigned, maintaining security procedures in transport; Participate in verbal and physical interventions with patients who represent a threat to themselves or others; and Assist with medical care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse including collecting specimens, measuring blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and temperature; and assists with administering medications. WORKING CONDITIONS Must have basic computer skills and be willing to learn new technologies as they are introduced into the workplace. Must be able to work more than 8 hours in a day and/or 40 hours in a week as required. Work with patients with challenging and potentially assaultive behaviors. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently. May transport patients or drive on state business.
