MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST
(Mental Health Specialist)

$3,235 - $4,716 MONTHLY

This employment opportunity is with Oregon State Hospital, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). This position is represented by a union.
 
This position provides evaluation and treatment of individuals with substance abuse problems, sexual problems, etc., who are mentally ill and/or developmentally disabled and receiving treatment at Oregon State Hospital.
 
This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of experience treating clients suffering from either alcohol/drug abuse or mental/emotional disturbance and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or closely related field; OR
 
An equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Note: A Master’s degree in Psychology or a closely-related field may be substituted for one year of the required work experience.

Some positions may require specialized treatment experience with MRDD clients, clients with substance abuse problems, sex offenders, or clients with chronic and/or acute mental illness. You will be notified of any special requirements if you are contacted for an interview.
 
NOTE:  Preference for interviews may be given to candidates who are a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC); a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) or who possess a Master’s degree.

  • Describe the coursework and/or trainings that you have received that have prepared you to provide group treatment, recommend behavioral interventions for patients, function as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team, and understand mental health disorders.
  • Describe your experience working with persons having severe mental illness and what has your role been in providing treatment to them.
  • Describe how you have worked within a treatment team(s) and what type of leadership/responsibility you assumed in that role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in developing curriculum for vocational, educational, rehabilitative and psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic groups and acts as leader or co-leader for group activities;
 
Interviews patients and administer tests and questionnaires to assess substance abuse history, rehabilitation needs, and sexual deviancy;
 
Makes appropriate diagnostic formulations and treatment recommendations and works with interdisciplinary treatment teams to develop and appropriate schedule of educational and treatment activities for each patients;
 
Provides clinical supervision to staff, students and volunteers, and participates in weekly supervision meetings for group leaders;
 
Participates in Psychology Department meetings and activities;
 
Leads or co-leads educational programs on substance abuse, sex offender treatment, etc., and provides training and in-service to staff;
 
Assists in overseeing operation of assigned services, such as scheduling, communications, and protocol;
 
Responsible for maintaining compliance with department and OSH documentation standards.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves daily contact with patients who manifest mental disorders and may encounter patients with hostile, potentially violent behavior.
 
Environment is noisy with frequent interruptions.
 
Possibility of exposure to infectious diseases.
 
You must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.  If not, you must be able to provide an alternate method of transportation.
 
Work hours subject to change with little notice. May be required to work hours that exceed regular schedule, i.e. a double shift or different shift in addition to regular schedule.
