This employment opportunity is with the Public Health Division (PHD), which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). There is one full-time opening in the Virology/Immunology section located within the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL) in HILLSBORO. A union represents this position.
This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
QUALIFICATIONS
One year of "technical trainee" experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a medical laboratory; OR
Completion of a certified Laboratory Assistant training program; OR
A Certificate or Associate of Applied Science Degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician training program; OR
Forty-five credit hours of university chemistry, biology, or microbiology laboratory courses.
Provide a copy of your transcripts only if you are using credits to qualify and mark (check/underline) all required and/or related courses to receive credit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position receives, sorts, records, and processes specimens and provides support functions for the Virology/Immunology Section of the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory.
MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE:
Receiving and processing clinical specimens for the laboratory including:
- Receiving, opening, and sorting incoming specimens.
- Monitoring and reviewing specimens for quality and clerical errors.
- Preparing specimens in the appropriate manner for testing.
Providing other support functions such as:
- Cleaning and sterilizing glassware and decontaminating and disposing of waste.
- Maintaining and calibrating equipment .
- Maintaining inventory and QC records.
- Participating in the Virology/Immunology section’s Quality Assurance process.
- Assisting in Virus isolation or other test areas to include media preparation, and specimen setup or other assistance with tests and paperwork.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Daily exposure to sera with potential for infection by hepatitis, HIV, and other viral rickettsial, and fungal pathogens. Frequent exposure to toxic chemicals. Latex may be present in the work environment.
