This employment opportunity is with the Public Health Division (PHD), which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS).  There is one limited duration opening (12 months from the date of hire) within the Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology Section located in PORTLAND.  These positions are represented by a union.
 
Benefits for these positions include a family health plan and leave accrual.

QUALIFICATIONS
 
A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline that included six-quarter units in statistics or quantitative analysis methods and procedures. 
 
OR
 
Three years of experience as a research assistant comparable to the work of a Research Analyst 1; or two years experience using computer applications to help gather, compile, analyze, and report information and statistical data.
 
Copy of your transcripts must be submitted if using the degree qualify to verify the six-quarter units in statistics or quantitative analysis methods and procedures.  Please CLEARLY MARK the qualifying courses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The purpose of this position is to assist and support primary investigators and the project coordinator(s) with the collection, management and analyses of surveillance data and with other epidemiologic case-control studies conducted within the Emerging Infection Program (EIP) of the Acute & Communicable Disease Prevention Program.  Responsibilities include supporting the establishment and coordination Oregon’s population-based surveillance system to monitor and study severe cervical dysplasia conditions among study populations within the state to assess the impact of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in collaboration with CDC's HPV Vaccine Impact Monitoring Project (HPV-IMPACT).  Under the supervision of the PI and guidance of the project coordinator, working with the CDC and other project site staff, the position will assist in the recruitment, coordination, and monitoring and providing technical assistance for the electronic and paper reporting from histopathology laboratories; follow-up with healthcare providers, case-patients and Oregon's ALERT Immunization Information System to collect HPV test status and other needed information; assuring that pathology specimens from sampled certain cases are selected correctly and properly sent to CDC's laboratory for further testing, working with cytopathology laboratories to enumerate unduplicated counts of screened women, coordinating case-control studies as needed, and assuring timely reporting to CDC.  In addition to coordinating the work of collecting data from cases, this position will manage project data systems, analyze and interpret data and provide findings to study collaborators, the funding agency, clinicians and the general public, and serve as a technical consult on these studies to interested parties.
 
MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE:
 
Assists with planning and conducting of chart reviews of cases reported from laboratories and other reporting sources to obtain complete reports and for report quality assurance purposes as needed. 
In collaboration with CDC, the Project PI and Coordinator, assists with the design and refinement of the surveillance system and research protocols and refines existing protocols.  Ensures reporting and study protocols are met.  
 
Assist with recruitment of histopathology and other laboratories to report case-patient information completely. 
Collects and assists with collection of surveillance and study data through multiple methods including: secure electronic and mailed or faxed reports from laboratories and healthcare providers, telephone interviews of patients, parents, physicians, and ancillary medical staff; and through contact with Oregon Immunization Registry personnel.  
 
Develops, tests, and manages surveillance and study databases and ensures and periodically reviews the quality of data (e.g., develops and manages a CIN-AIS case report module within ACDP’s Filemaker-based system in consultation with other staff and consultants.)  Uses statistical software, such as Access, SAS or SPSS, for data management and analysis.
 
Produces periodic (e.g., bi-weekly) reports of case reporting from reporting sources and providing reporting sources with timely feedback regarding report completeness and accuracy.
 
Assists with developing case tracking methods for tracking the completion of basic and enhanced case report data from multiple providers, laboratories, and case-patients.
 
Assists with assuring that selected pathology specimens are properly sent to CDC for further testing, that specimens are tracked according to project protocols, and that reports are received back from CDC on time.
 
Evaluates quality and adequacy of surveillance and research tools and systems and provides feedback to CDC on quality of the surveillance system and study design and methodology.
 
Display data in graphs, tables, and maps. 
 
Assists with summarizing data and writing semi-annual reports for CDC.  Writes and revises documentation of project database systems and computer programs and algorithms. Writes sections and provides review and comment for protocols for any involved institutional review boards and helps with preparing responses to queries from institutional review boards.  Assists with the preparation of written and oral reports for other interested partners and for presentations at state and national scientific meetings.
 
Prepares and provides resource and recruitment documents for reporting laboratories and clinicians.
 
Provides computer technical support for database management, conference calls, meetings and project presentations.
 
Supports other project activities as needed.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
Must be able to access information from a variety of sources with other experts.  Must be able to conduct interviews during evenings and weekends; travel, including driving, may be required in all increment weather conditions.  You must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.  If not, you must be able to provide an alternate method of transportation.
