This employment opportunity is with Addictions and Mental Health, Blue Mountain Recovery Center, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). This list will be used to fill full-time, part time, limited duration and temporary positions as they occur.  Upon review and determination that you meet the minimum qualifications, your name will be placed on the list of qualified applicants (QLF) that will then be used to select applicants for job interviews.  These positions are represented by a union.

This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Please be aware that due to the economic downturn and subsequent state budget short-fall the Governor has ordered mandatory furloughs for employees.  This position will be required to take furloughs in the biennium 2009-2011.

Blue Mountain Recovery Center (BMRC) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must obtain a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) registration within four (4) months of hire.

Preference may be given to candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science or have completed a significant amount of college coursework in the behavioral sciences. To receive credit for a degree or college coursework, we ask that you submit a copy of your college transcripts with your application and test material.

    • Employees in this classification provide basic physical care to patients who are mentally, emotionally, behaviorally, and/or physically impaired.  Please describe your training and/or experience that provided you the knowledge of basic physical care to patients.  Also describe: (a) the type of patient you cared for;  (b) the age group of those patients (e.g., elderly, children, adult); (c) where you provided this care (type of facility); (d)  the type of experience (e.g., full-time job, student intern, volunteer); and (e) any registration(s) you hold (e.g., Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA); Child Care Worker (CCW); etc.).
    • To assist in maintaining records of resident care and treatment, the employees monitor and observe behavior of patients and record these observations in clear, concise written records (charts).  Please describe any experience and/or training you have in keeping records and include any courses or on-the-job experience that would prepare you for these tasks, citing specific training and/or experience in documenting for medical records or files.
    • Employees in this classification deal with patients who may exhibit physically aggressive and/or verbally abusive behavior toward the staff or other patients.  Please describe any training and/or experience you have that would prepare you to handle a patient acting out in this manner.  Also list, by title, any related courses or training you have completed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Mental Health Therapy Technician functions as an active member of an interdisciplinary team to provide physical care to adult or elderly patients who are mentally, behaviorally and/or physically impaired. 

Monitors and/or assists patients in daily living activities such as bathing, eating and oral hygiene;
 
Supervises and escorts patients in activities on and off the hospital grounds;
 
Assists with admitting and discharging patients, completing documentation and forms, orienting patients to ward and handling patient property;
 
Observes and records behavior; may be responsible for entering, retrieving, updating and deleting information from the computer system;
 
Manage physically aggressive and combative patients; and
 
Feeding grooming and dressing; assists with lifting, moving, turning, and walking patients;

After obtaining required training/certification, some employees may assist the Registered Nurse with medical care such as collecting specimens, measuring blood pressure, pulse, respiration and temperature;

After obtaining required training/certification, some employees may administer medications;

Serves as a resource person for patients by attending to their basic physical, emotional and social needs such as assuring that patients have such personal items as soap, toothbrushes and shampoo and are bathed, groomed, properly clothed and fed;

Documents patients' responses to treatment and shares the information with the treatment team; provides input for the changes in treatment programs;

Spends time daily/weekly interacting with patients individually or as a group; and

Participate in verbal and physical interventions with patients as needed.
Participates in maintaining standards for safety, sanitation, fire regulations and security.

WORKING CONDITIONS


Must be able to work more than 8 hours in a day and/or 40 hours in a week as required.
 
Must have basic computer skills and be willing to learn new technologies as they are introduced into the work place.
 
May require on-call and/or rotating schedules.

Work with patients with challenging and potentially assaultive behaviors.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently.

May transport patients or drive on state business.  A valid Oregon driver’s license with acceptable driving record is required at the time of hire.
