This employment opportunity is with the Public Health Division (PHD), which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). There is one limited duration position (10 months from date of hire) in the Virology/Immunization Section within the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL), located in HILLSBORO.   A union represents this position.
 
Benefits for this position include a family health plan and leave accrual.

Please be aware that due to the economic downturn and subsequent state budget short-fall the Governor has ordered mandatory furloughs for employees. This position will be required to take furloughs in the biennium 2009-2011.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
A Bachelor's degree with advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological sciences fields, which shows knowledge of microbiology  theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments and one year of microbiological laboratory experience OR
 
An equivalent combination of training and experience which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and other instruments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
This position provides analytical testing for infectious diseases (including HIV, chlamydia, syphilis, and hepatitis) in the Virology/Immunology section of the Public Health Laboratory. 
 
MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE:
 
Conduct and monitor the performance of high complexity (classified per federal regulatory guidelines), analytical laboratory testing methods and instrumentation for infectious organisms and disease states, including agents of BT.
Review instrument or manually generated results for laboratory test results. 
Identify and include method and organism appropriate quality control samples with patient samples.
Interpret, assess, and hold all testing results for specimens requiring additional supplemental testing. 
Set-up, initialize, and perform necessary preventative maintenance for laboratory instruments to be used in testing.  Assess satisfactory equipment function. 
Based on analytical information from laboratory results obtained during testing, enter appropriate results and comments into the computer system, review, and complete results.
Monitor, maintain, and requisition sufficient inventory of reagents, test kits, supplies and materials essential to the performance of work assignments in a timely manner.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
Potential exposure to infectious or otherwise hazardous microbiologicals, toxins, and chemical agents.  Immunization is required to work in certain areas of the laboratory.
