Officials to discuss North Ridge Estates health risk findings

What: Public health officials from the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) will hold a public meeting on Thursday to discuss health risks associated with asbestos at the North Ridge Estates residential subdivision near Klamath Falls.

When and where: The meeting is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Oregon State University Extension Office, 3328 Vandenberg Road in Klamath Falls.

Agenda: Last month DHS released a health assessment of North Ridge Estates and found the site to be a past and present public health hazard. This meeting is an opportunity for community members to discuss study findings with health officials.

The subdivision was once the site of a 80-building military barracks. Subsequent demolition of the barracks created large amounts of asbestos-containing waste materials, which were disposed of on-site. In 2002, more than 49 tons of these fragments were removed from the surface of 30 subdivision lots.

Staff from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality will also be available to answer questions and provide an update on their involvement at the site.

The complete public health consultation report is available on the Web or at the Klamath Falls Public Library, 126 S. Third St. in Klamath Falls. Public comments will be taken until June 16.
