State appoints interim superintendent of Oregon State Hospital

The Oregon Department of Human Services has named David Freed, Ph.D., of Salem to be interim superintendent of Oregon State Hospital, effective October 1.

For more than four years, Freed has been the Oregon State Hospital's chief psychologist. During that time he also served as the interim program director for the Forensic Rehabilitation and Transition Services.

The 45-year-old Corvallis native earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Oregon and holds a doctorate in behavioral neuroscience from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before returning to Oregon, he was associate professor of neuropsychiatry and behavioral sciences at Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock.

"We are extremely pleased to have someone of Dr. Freed's caliber and experience stepping into this role during a crucial period in the history of the hospital," said Bob Nikkel, administrator of the DHS Office of Mental Health and Addiction Services Office, which oversees the hospital. "His experience is broad and cuts across the entire mental health spectrum from pediatrics to gerontology in both hospital and community settings."

Freed has published numerous articles and papers and given presentations on aging, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, severe and persistent mental illness, community mental health and rural health issues.

"This appointment is a unique opportunity and a chance to continue working with and for exceptional people," said Freed. "OSH has been fulfilling a vital public service in the Oregon mental health system for 120 years. It is rewarding to be part of that."

Freed succeeds Stanley Mazur-Hart, of Salem, who announced his resignation, effective Sept. 30, in July. He had been superintendent since 1990.
