Director's Message
November 26, 2004
To: DHS Employees
From: Gary Weeks, Director
Giving thanks
Thanksgiving has been for many years my favorite holiday. It is a time to reflect on the many things in my life for which I am thankful including a loving, healthy, and supportive family; good friends and co-workers; and the opportunity to do work that I believe is critically important.
This year, I find myself thinking about the thousands of men and women who are serving this country abroad at considerable risk each day. Regardless of how one may feel about the wisdom or the virtue of the conflicts we are engaged in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, these individuals and their families are making incredible sacrifices for this country and deserve our thanks during this difficult time.
I also think a lot about the many families in our state with struggles everyday to make ends meet - attempting to feed, cloth and shelter their children or to care for aging parents.
I know it is because of the commitment and hard work of the staff throughout DHS that many of these families do get through each day. So, above all, I am very thankful for all of you who are doing your best, under trying circumstances, to help so many Oregonians live a better life.
I wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Please travel safely as you go about the state to share this Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends.
Food for thought
