Prescription Monitoring Program Info
Why attend this conference?
Opioids and other controlled substances are important, if not essential agents in treating certain types of chronic pain. However, the prevalence of drug misuse, abuse and addiction has fostered considerable concern among prescribers. In fact, Oregon now ranks among the top 10 states for abuse of prescription drugs. This dilemma of rising prescription drug abuse may be contributing to the nationally documented undertreatment of chronic pain. Prescribers must have tools to help them navigate this complex set of problems. Electronic prescription monitoring programs (PMPs), now available in most states, represent a valuable option for prescribers who want to contain risk of abuse, misuse and diversion. This program, with presentations by experts from around the country, will engage the participant in a discussion of the challenges and possible solutions.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Discuss the dual national epidemics of prescription drug abuse and the undertreatment of pain, including the provider's responsibility to manage both.
- Discuss the purpose and use of a prescription monitoring program and how such programs can aid in prescribing adequately for legitimate pain patients;
- Identify how PMPs support a prescriber in determining the legitimacy of a patient presenting for controlled substances;
- Identify three components of a successful PMP (data collection, data security and report availability).
