Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. Asthma symptoms occur when a person is exposed to a trigger such as tobacco smoke, animal fur or feathers, cockroaches, mold or mildew, and pollen. Asthma symptoms are controllable with quality health care, the correct medications, and good self management skills. By controlling their asthma, people with asthma can live healthy and productive lives.
