The Burden of Asthma in Oregon: 2008 This report provides a compilation of data on asthma in The Burden of Asthma: 2008Oregon. The report includes information on asthma prevalence, hospitalizations, deaths, management of asthma, pediatric asthma, and more.
 
 
 
Geographic Disparities in Pediatric Asthma Control Among Oregon Children on Medicaid (pdf): This report identifies counties in Oregon experiencing higher rates of poorly controlled asthma among children ages 0-17 years old who are on the Oregon Health Plan. In this report, claims data for emergency department visit rates, hospitalization rates, and rates of a low medication ratio were mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This report was developed with guidance from the Oregon Asthma Disparities Leadership Team, comprised of representatives from a broad range of health systems and community based organizations and agencies.
 
 Focus Group Report: People with Asthma & Caregivers of Children with Asthma (pdf)
Focus Group Report: People with Asthma & Caregivers of Children with Asthma (pdf): This report provides the results of four focus groups in fall 2007 conducted by the Oregon Asthma Program. Participants consisted of two groups: people with asthma and caregivers of children with asthma. The focus groups were conducted in Portland and Eugene. Topics included: being diagnosed with asthma; perceived severity of asthma; asthma control and management; interactions with the healthcare system and providers; asthma education; community support; and smoking and secondhand smoke.

Oregon Guiding Documents for Asthma
 
Oregon Asthma Leadership Plan: The goals identified in the Oregon Asthma Leadership Plan included critical areas of focus to improve the quality of life for all Oregonians with asthma.  
 
The Guide to Improving Asthma Care in Oregon: Indicators for Quality Care in Health Systems. The Guide was developed to improve asthma management and to define appropriate indicators for monitoring the quality of medical care provided to Oregonians with asthma.

National Guiding Documents for Asthma
 
To help health care professionals bridge the gap between current knowledge and practice, the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program's (NAEPP) convened expert panels to prepare the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma for the diagnosis and management of asthma.
 
Key Clinical Activities for Quality Asthma Care contains recommendations of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program. [March 28, 2003 MMWR Report].

CD Summary Newsletters: Asthma
 
The Current Disease (CD) Summary is a publication of the Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology (ODPE). This publication is distributed every two weeks to health care providers and various public health agencies inside and beyond Oregon; media representatives; medical laboratories; hospitals; and other health professionals and institutions. Articles are contributed by staff members of the various programs within ODPE.

Winded at Work (pdf): October 14, 2008 – Discusses the work-related asthma, presents data on asthma in the workplace from the Oregon Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System Asthma Callback Survey, and describes methods on diagnosing asthma as work-related.
 
Geographic Disparities in Pediatric Asthma Control (pdf): August 31, 2007 - Presents data on geographic disparities in asthma control among Oregon children ages 0-17 years old who are on Medicaid. Provides information on resources for addressing disparities and improving asthma care for all children.
 
Asthma and Air Pollution: Is there a Link? (pdf): September 20, 2005 - Examines the role of air pollution in causing and exacerbating asthma, particularly in children, and describes efforts in Oregon to track links between asthma and the environment.
 
Asthma - Self-Management and Self-Delusion (pdf): June 28, 2005 - Describes findings from the Oregon Survey of Adult Asthma (OSAA), a survey of more than 600 Oregonians with asthma conducted in 2002.
 
Tobacco & Asthma - Enough to Take Your Breath Away (pdf): April 20, 2004 - 31% of Oregonians with asthma smoke, a rate more than a third higher than among those without asthma (23%; 2001 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System [BRFSS]).
 
Asthma - It's Nothing to Wheeze At (pdf): October 8, 2002 - A look at asthma medication use and emergency department visits in Oregon.
 
Asthma Treatment Guidelines (pdf): February 29, 2000 - This Oregon update features a review of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program's (NAEPP) Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. Included is a summary table for the Management of Asthma in Adults and Children.

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly (MMWR)
 
The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) Series is prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is often called "the voice of the CDC". The MMWR series is the CDC's method for providing timely, reliable, authoritative, accurate, objective, and useful public health information and recommendations. CDC's National Asthma Control Program maintains a list of links to asthma related MMWRs.

Keeping Oregonians Healthy is a statewide report that summarizes information about the burden of chronic diseases and related risk factors among Oregonians. It provides information about how many people in our state are affected by various diseases or conditions that can cause them. It also reviews differences in rates of these conditions by county, by socioeconomic status, and between racial and ethnic communities in the state. Finally, it describes effective strategies through which we can manage and even prevent chronic disease among the state's population.
