The Asthma Action Plan summarizes the doctor’s instructions for self-management of asthma. It has places for the doctor to fill in directions for medication, peak flow numbers, asthma triggers, and what to do in case of an asthma attack or an emergency.
The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) Guidelines recommend that people with persistent asthma have a written Asthma Action Plan. Copies of the plan should be kept at the doctor’s office, at home, and at school or work. The Asthma Action Plan should be updated every year, or more often if needed.
