The Bonanza Mine opened in 1865, about 8 miles east of Sutherlin, was permanently closed in 1960. EHAP has been asked by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to evaluate the public health significance of exposure to mercury and arsenic in the soil and mine tailings from a former mercury mine.
