The Douglas County Health Department requested that EHAP evalute the health risk of arsenic contaminated wells in the Sutherlin, Oakland, Yoncalla area. Arsenic is a naturally-occurring toxic element found in natural deposits in bedrock and soil. Studies conducted in Douglas County in the 1960's and 70's showed that wells in the Sutherlin area were contaminated by naturally-occurring arsenic.
EHAP, in collaboration with the Environmental Public Health Tracking tested 127 wells in the Sutherlin, Oakland, and Yoncalla area. In most of the wells that were tested, arsenic was not detected; however some of the wells had arsenic levels above the safe drinking water standard of 10 parts per billion (10 ppb). Of particular concern are a small number having levels above 200 ppb.
For more information on the results of the study see below under In the News. For information on arsenic, well safety, and how to get your well tested, please see below under Educational Materials and Related Websites.
