Lead Indicator:  Childhood blood lead testing

Measure: Children Tested

A blood test is available to measure the amount of lead in your blood and to estimate the amount of your recent exposure to lead. This measure consists of the percentage and number of children who were tested for elevated blood lead levels before the age of 3, by state, county and ZIP code.

Blood tests are commonly used to screen children for lead poisoning and be easily conducted in a physician’s office. Since we cannot determine exactly how many children in Oregon have elevated blood lead levels at any one time through routine tracking, the percent of children tested for elevated blood lead before the age of 3 is used instead as an estimate. This is called an indicator.

Blood lead level data are collected by state and local childhood lead poisoning prevention programs. The number children tested with blood lead levels above 10 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) cannot be interpreted as prevalence or incidence for the population because Oregon only requires at-risk children to be tested.

The tables, charts and maps show how many of the children born in a given year were tested.

Important note: Residence information was not available for over 30% of children tested for lead. Therefore, the table and maps below that show information by county do not include the children tested for which residence information is unknown.  The numbers reported in the table below for the entire state of Oregon do include all children tested, whether or not their residence information was available. Due to this missing information, some of the differences in testing may be due to differences in residence reporting.

Each of the three shades on the map represent one third of all ZIP codes, with darker shades indicating higher percentages of testing. Striped areas are ZIP codes for which no data were available.

Note:  Large geographical areas are not equivalent to large populations. ZIP code area varies with population density.
