The Harmful Algae Bloom Surveillance (HABS) program seeks to provide an understanding about the occurrence of toxic algae blooms in Oregon and their impact on human health. Harmful algae blooms occur when tiny, microscopic plants grow quickly in marine and fresh waters, using up oxygen and releasing toxins that are dangerous to animals and humans. Over the past few decades there has been an increase in harmful algae blooms across the globe. Neither these events nor their human health impacts have been well documented or characterized. Because no single agency has the resources or mandate to address the problem, a key goal for HABS is to develop relationships with partners and stakeholders so data can be collected and shared and coordination of effort occurs. HABS will also help communities and drinking water suppliers by providing guidance in the area of monitoring and testing for HABS.
