REPORTING UNSAFE WORK PRACTICES

Lead dust from household paint is the most common cause of lead poisoning. Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. In general, the older the home is, the more likely it is to have lead-based paint. Remodeling, renovation and routine maintenance are all activities that can create and spread large amounts of dangerous lead dust.

The Lead-Based Paint Program actively enforces violations of unsafe work practices. Program staff follow up on all tips and complaints.

The following unsafe work practices may create lead hazards:

• Open flame burning or torching

• Machine sanding and grinding without containing the dust and debris (containment)

• Hydro blasting and pressure washing without containment

• Abrasive and sand blasting without containment                                                                 

• Dry sanding and scraping without containment
