A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration kit to assist in the process of planning safe routes for your school
  • Oregon Supplement (pdf)
This document serves as Oregon's supplement to the national NHTSA Safe Routes to School Toolkit. The NHTSA Toolkit is a complete guide and handbook for developing a Safe Routes to School program. The Oregon Supplement provides facts and planning guidance specific to Oregon and shows how Oregon schools and communities are encouraging and enabling kids to walk and bike to school. We recommend that Oregon schools and communities use the NHTSA toolkit with this supplement.
Pilot Project

In the fall of 2001, the Oregon Department of Human Services, Health Services, in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Education, established six Safe Routes to School pilot projects that will improve opportunities for students to walk and bike to school and will address safety and health issues. The projects will be used to showcase how to assess and plan "safe routes to schools" to increase physical activity for pre-teens. Increased physical activity can reduce obesity and chronic disease as well as help students become and continue to be fit, healthy and ready to learn.
