Annual Performance Measures
Public Pool and Spa Program
This program has a long history of setting standards for public swimming pools and spas to control potential disease transmission and eliminate injuries and accidents.
Oregon has over 3,000 public pools operated by apartment complexes, condominium and neighborhood associations, lodging facilities, schools, youth camps, municipalities and recreation districts.
Trends:
- New pool construction continues--particularly pools at new motels.
- Many large municipal pools built in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s are being replaced.
- The rules are being revised to address new technologies and design.
- Industry research is continuing to find more effective water treatment processes and technology.
Our goal is to work in partnership with local health departments, the recreation and tourist industry and the public to reduce or reduce the risk of waterborne illness and injury at public facilities.
Our primary responsibilities include rulemaking, oversight of the field inspection system, technical assistance, training and education.
Licensing, inspection and enforcement services are provided through Health Services's Field Services Unit and local county health departments.
Tourist Facility Program
This program has a long history of setting safety and health standards for the hotel/motel/recreational vehicle/organizational camp industries.
Trends:
- Oregon's growing tourism industry will continue to benefit from Oregon's excellent national reputation for high quality tourist accommodations.
- The recreational vehicle industry is growing due to aging demographics and tourism promotion.
The Department of Human Services is proposing to amend OAR Chap. 333 Divisions 029, 030, 031,150 relating to drinking water standards for small licensed facilities and variances in food service establishments.
These proposed rules were developed by workgroups consisting of representatives from DHS and local health departments.
