Oregon hazardous waste site that EHAP is currently assessing:

Former Ken Foster Farm

Former Ken Foster Farm

On this page:

Sherwood, Washington County
The former Ken Foster Farms site is a 40-acre tract of historic pasture land at the southeast corner of Sherwood.  Beginning in the 1960s, wastes from Frontier Leather Company were deposited on the site with the purpose of increasing the organic content and nutrients in the soil.

A preliminary assessment by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) indicated that the Frontier tannery waste that was applied to the land included animal wastes (animal tissue, fat, and hair), chromium-treated animal hides and scraps, and waste water sludge from settling tanks. In recent years, the former pasture has been redeveloped and eight homes now occupy the site.

How did EHAP become involved?

The US EPA requested that EHAP evaluate the public health impact of the contaminated soil.  A report and fact sheet that discuss EHAP's findings and recommendations have been completed.
