Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Isolation of this organism requires special methods of collection and transportation. The greatest success in recovering CMV has been from urine and tissue samples. Please adhere to following requirements:

Collection and Shipping Instructions

Virus Isolation

1. Urine: Collect 20-50 ml of a clean - voided urine sample (preferably not first morning specimen), and place in a tightly sealed, screw-cap, sterile container. Place on ice packs, do not allow to freeze. Maintain on wet ice until receipt in the Virology/Immunology Section of the OSPHL. If this specimen meets acceptable criteria, testing for CMV will be performed. CMV is relatively unstable hence transporting the specimen as quickly as possible increases the chance of successfully recovering the virus.

2. Tissue: All tissue specimens (surgical or autopsy), should be frozen at -60oC to -80oC as soon as possible. Keep in this frozen state and submit on dry ice to the OSPHL.

3. Other Specimens: Please call Virology/Immunology at 503-693-4100 for instructions. Place specimen immediately on wet ice and ship with ice pack. Stools are unsuitable for CMV isolation.

NOTE: Noncompliance with above criteria may result in a specimen being "Unsatisfactory for CMV Testing."
