Here’s a last-minute checklist to use before respite care begins. Use this or a similar list of your own to help avoid last-minute crises.

  • Prepare emergency information and other forms before respite care.

  • Make time for a pre-respite conversation with the respite provider. Use the time to exchange important information.

  • Is the family member receiving care or taking medication (prescription or over-the-counter)? If so, be sure to provide enough to last during his/her stay. Also, check to see that instructions on the bottle are clear and correct.

  • If you would like your child to have spending money, let your respite provider know the child has the money, or leave spending money with the respite provider and ask him/her to return any not spent to you.

  • Don’t forget that this may be a new situation for your child or spouse. Is there a favorite item that will make him/her feel comfortable being with someone else, or in another home? Also, think about any special items needed by your child and make sure your respite provider has them on hand or send them with your child. These things might include diapers, adaptive equipment, eating utensils, special foods, etc.

  • If respite care is taking place at home, be sure the provider knows where necessary clothes are kept. If care is outside your home, be sure to provide enough clothing and the right type.

  • Are personal items such as toothbrush, deodorant, diapers, etc., readily available?

  • Double-check transportation arrangements.

  • Make sure your respite provider has all emergency information, including a way to contact you or an alternative person. Is there any additional important information not noted on the emergency contacts form?

  • Keep your respite provider’s name, address, and phone number on hand.

  • Have you notified the respite provider of any changes in your plans?

Now...

Relax. Go ahead with your plans feeling confident that your family member is receiving the best of care in your absence.
