GCSS membership

Membership requirements

The public members of the Governor's Commission on Senior Services are appointed by the Governor for three year terms. A majority of the membership shall be 60 years of age or older. The Commission membership must be:

  • Broadly representative of major public and private agencies who are experienced in or have demonstrated particular interest in the special needs of elderly persons;
  • Advocates for elderly persons;
  • Persons who are active in advocacy organizations representing the interests of the elderly and people with disabilities who are served by programs provided by the Department of Human Services (DHS); or
  • Consumers of DHS services including low income, minority and people with disabilities.

How to apply

Individuals who wish to serve on the Governor's Commission on Senior Services must submit an interest form to the Governor. Potential members are screened to ensure that they meet the criteria. The Governor's office will consult with interested parties before making a decision. The Governor's office may request that the Oregon State Police review a person's background before making an appointment.

You may download the interest forms at the Governor's Web page.

Individuals who are considering applying for the Commission should be aware that the Commission meets at least nine months a year for two days; the fourth (4th) Thursday and the Wednesday preceding the 4th Thursday. Wednesday is dedicated to the Commission's working committees. Commission members are expected to serve on two committees. There may also be work done between meetings, either by conference call or by individual research. Sometimes the Chair "mandates" that Commission members attend critical hearings and meetings in other parts of the state. Commission members also serve as liaisons to other organizations such as local and state advisory councils.
