Incident prompts lockdown at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution
 
At approximately 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2011, an altercation between inmates broke out in the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution West Dining Room, spilling out onto the West Compound. Staff immediately responded, and deployed chemical spray to stop the fights. Thirteen inmates were escorted to the Disciplinary Segregation Unit as a result. No staff injuries were reported. A few inmates suffered minor injuries. 
 
EOCI was placed on lockdown status at approximately 1:20 p.m. Visiting room operations were canceled and visitors were escorted out of the secure perimeter. Inmate visiting is canceled until further notice. Inmate visitors are encouraged to call the facility before traveling great distances to ensure that visiting has been resumed. More information will be posted as soon as it is available.
 
The incident is under internal investigation.
